My Path

Designing from the Margins

An exclusion triggered by a “·”

When design and implementation are led by those unaffected by certain challenges, like unique name formats, it often results in systems that exclude rather than accommodate, as seen in  real-name authentication processes.

What if cycling meant collecting coffee grounds for composting? Paddleboarding turned into ocean cleanup missions? Or playing pickleball unlocked a whole new way of living beyond the 996? Let’s see how movement can spark fun, inclusivity, and a more sustainable future together!

Together with Mini Moves Matter and How Bottle, we launched the Sustainable Waves Initiative—where water sports meet ocean care. The program attracted over 10 partner brands, offering participants unique rewards such as 3D-printed souvenirs made from recycled plastic and handcrafted litter grabbers created from reclaimed fishing nets.

Osqledaren is Sweden’s largest technical student magazine. Over the course of my one-year journey with Osqledaren, I took on a variety of roles, starting with photographer, illustrator, and layouter for the first issue. In the second issue, I collaborated with others to write and illustrate an article. By the third issue, I was writing an article independently, and by the final issue in 2024, I designed the cover of the magazine. My experience covered all aspects of magazine production, and throughout this time, I gained a diverse set of skills.

OoOps, that’s all!

My Practice

My design journey began with the people and communities around me. Having experienced various forms of exclusion in life, I finally gained the ability to design interventions to change these systems, driven by highly motivated agency. This realization led me to begin with community-based practices, exploring the messy and complex realities around me to identify authentic problems and address them through design. Sometimes, the outcome is not a tangible product but a workshop or an ethnographic study framed in a design context. Even when immediate implementation is not feasible, I focus on using the design process itself as a tool to influence the present.

Since my sophomore year, I have been exploring the development of a blind-friendly hide-and-seek game inspired by a blind friend’s experiences. This project revealed unexpected reflections during its initial testing phase with the kids in my neighborhood. Beyond this, I have explored how design can support sustainability and inclusivity, both in and out of the classroom. These efforts span product ideas, service systems, and interaction-focused projects. During my internships, I took on diverse roles beyond those of a typical designer, using design thinking to make social innovation more accessible and impactful.

So I do not see myself solely as a product, service, or interaction designer. The form of the output matters less to me than finding the approach that best fulfills my goals—one that highlights problems or makes them easier to solve. I define myself as a designer for an inclusive and sustainable society.

Everyone should have the right to play and have fun together! Why not start solving social problems with a game?

Yes, unfortunately, it’s design too. But don’t attempt it lightly—designing for real people and communities is deeply rewarding and easily addictive.

What? If I can’t sit properly, that cute dog might be affected? I guess I’ll have to sit still all day then!
What? If I don’t sit properly, this perfect square will turn into messy lines? Ugh, this is torture for us perfectionists!
